There are six Cardinals in Catholic Church in India and none of them is Dalit; Same is the case with 30 archbishops no Dalit Christian; out of the 175 bishops there are 9 Dalit Bishops. Among the 822 Major Superiors there are 12 Dalit Christians and out of the 25000 Catholic priests 1130 are Dalits and out of some 1 lakh nuns, only some thousands come from Dalit Christian community.

Ahead of the bishops' recent ad limina visit to the Vatican, Dalit leaders had written to the pope seeking his intervention to end caste-based discrimination.
Some 200 bishops from India's 174 dioceses met Pope Francis in three batches from Sept. 13 to Oct. 3 in the Vatican.
"Dalit Christians are disappointed" because Pope Francis did not address the issue in any of the meetings, said a press statement from the Dalit Christian Liberation Movement (DCLM) on Oct. 12.
"We are sad and disappointed. We were hopeful our bishops and the pope would discuss ways to end discriminative practices in the Church," DCLM leader Mary John told ucanews.

క్రైస్తవ మతలోకి మారినవారిలో కులదృష్టి తీసివేయడంలో క్రైస్తవ మతం విజయం సాధించలేకపోయింది. హిందువుల జీవితాలను ఈ మాదిరిగానైతే కులమే నియంత్రిస్తుందో, క్రైస్తవ జీవితాలను కూడా కులమే శాసిస్తోందని చెప్పడంలో నాకు ఏ దురుద్దేశము లేదు. క్రైస్తవ మతానికి మారినవాళ్ళలో బ్రాహ్మణ క్రైస్తవులు ఉన్నారు, బ్రాహ్మణేతర క్రైస్తవులు ఉన్నారు, బ్రహ్మణేతర క్రైస్తవుల్లో మళ్లీ, మరాఠా క్రైస్తవులు, మహార్ క్రైస్తవులు, మాంగ్ క్రైస్తవులు, భంగి క్రైస్తవులు, మాల క్రైస్తవులు, మాదిగ క్రైస్తవులు అని అనేక కులాలుగా ఉన్నారు. వీరిలో సహపంక్తి భోజనాలు ఉండవు. వివాహ బాంధవ్యాలను ఏర్పరుచుకోవడానికి ఇష్టపడరు. హిందువులలాగానే వీళ్ళు కూడా కుల పోకడలతో కొట్టుమిట్టాడుతున్నవారే.

Protestants. It is more true of Southern India than it is of the Northern or even Central India. But the fact remains that Christianity has not succeeded in dissolving the feeling of caste from among the converts to Christianity. The distinction between touchables and untouchbles may be confined to a corner. The Church School may be open to all. Still there is no gainsaying the fact that caste governs the life of the Christians as much as it does the life of the Hindus. There are Brahmin Christians and Non-Brahmin Christians. Among Non-Brahmin Christians there are Maratha Christians, Mahar Christians, Mang Christians and Bhangi Christians. Similarly in the South there are Pariah Christians, Malla Christians and Madiga Christians. They would not intermarry, they would not inter-dine. They are as much caste ridden as the Hindus are.

క్రైస్తవ మిషనరీల ద్వారా విద్య, వైద్యంలో అందించబడిన సేవలు, భారతీయ క్రైస్తవులకు సమీపములో అందుబాటులో ఉండేవి కాదు. వీరికంటే అవి ఎక్కువగా సవర్ణ హిందూ అగ్రకులస్థులకే ఎక్కువ లబ్ది చేకూర్చాయి. (గతంలో హిందూమత ప్రభావం వలన) అస్పృష్య క్రైస్తవులు అత్యంత పేదవారు ఉండడం మరియూ ఉన్నత విద్యావకాశాలు పొందాలనే ఘాడమైన ఆకాంక్ష తగినంత లేనివారుగా ఉన్నారు. కాబట్టి, అస్పృష్య క్రైస్తవుల వికాసం అనే దృక్కోణంలో చూస్తే, క్రైస్తవ మిషనరీల ద్వారా నిర్వహించబడుతున్న, పాఠ్యశాలలు, కళాశాలలు, వసతి గృహాలకు చేసిన ఖర్చు మొత్తం వృధాగా అస్పృష్యులకు ఉపయోగపడని రీతిలో చేయబడినది. ఇదే విధంగా మిషనరీలు అందించిన వైద్య సహాయాలు కూడా హిందూ అగ్రకులకే ఉపయోగపడింది. మరీ ముఖ్యంగా ఆసుపత్రుల వినియోగంలో ఇది నూటికి నూరుపాళ్లు వాస్తవం.
ఈ విషయం చాలా క్రైస్తవ మిస్సినరీలకు కూడా అర్ధం అయ్యి జరుగుతున్నదే. అయినప్పటికీ ప్రతీ సంవత్సరం నిధుల కేటాయింపులు జరుగుతూనే ఉంటాయి. ఈ విధమైన కార్యక్రమాల వెనుక ఉన్న లక్ష్యం మిషనరీలతో హిందూ అగ్రకులాలకు సత్సంబంధాలు కల్పించడమే అని నిస్సందేహంగా చెప్పవచ్చు. మత మార్పిడి లక్ష్యంగా, హిందూ అగ్రకులాలకు ప్రయోజనాలు కల్పించడం అనేది వృధా ప్రయాస అని, అది చివరికి వైఫల్యం వైపే నడిపిస్తుందని క్రైస్తవ మిషనరీలు ఇప్పటికైనా గ్రహిస్తే మంచిదని నా అభిప్రాయం.
